In a very humanly and emotional act of keeping elephants warm during the winters, ladies in a village from UP knitted super big size garments for protecting them from the harsh cold.

Sharing the photographs of female elephants Laxmi and Suzy sporting beautifully embroidered jumpsuits, which cover their back, legs and neck, as centre staff and villagers stand among them. All 20 of the elephants are being wrapped in warm jumpers and ready to face the wintry chills of January. The handiwork of the women took several months to complete after a requested was made by the staff at Wildlife SOS.

Women near Mathura’s Elephant Care Centre and Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation in the north of Mathura in UP reportedly started creating colourful clothes which looked like pyjama and sweaters after the conservation centre staff notified about the temperature conditions for this winter which were forecasted to approach below zero at the night time.

The conservation centre has taken in the rescued elephants who had suffered from beatings and chronic neglect. The founder of the conservation centre Kartick Satyanarayan said that it was very crucial to protect the elephants from the intense cold especially the ones who were previously abused. She said, ” The cold also aggravates their arthritis which is a common issue that our rescued elephants have to deal with.”

Currently, the centre is house to nearly 20 elephants that were rescued from different trafficking mafias, illegal captivity and street begging exploitation and some from the circus where they were subjected to the harsh beating and cruelty.

In the past, they had made jackets and blankets for the elephants. However, the jumpers is a part of a pilot project as a part of an initial experiment,” Kartick Satyanarayan, founder of the Elephant Conservation and Care Centre.
