102 Not Out is a movie directed by Umesh Shukla. The story is about an old man who wants to live longer. He basically wants to break the world record for staying at the crease for the maximum amount of time. “I’m strictly opposed to dying,” he says at one point.
Amitabh here is seen as a father to Rishi Kapoor and he wants his soon to be lively and in a merry mood. He has the hopes of living longer while on the other hand, Rishi accepts oldage with a sad face. Rishi Kapoor is 75 years old in the movie and whereas Amitabh is 102. Hence the title of the movie comes from this.
Based on a play of the same name by Saumya Joshi, Shukla’s film is a sweet but a dull one. It is about a person who never quits and gives up hope just like that. One can see that the two legendary actors play off each other. Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor talk in a Gujarati accent
Kapoor, as Babulal Vakharia, is a former mathematics teacher – a grump by profession who likes his curtains the way they are and can only sleep wrapped up in his childhood blanket. Dattatraya, his enterprising and animated father, played by Bachchan, compels Babu to change his habits and discard his coping mechanisms.
There is more than a touch of insensitivity in the way the old man goes about expressing his tough love.
The story begins with Datta asking Babu to move into an old-age home because of Babu’s droopy behaviour annoys him. He wants to be the world’s oldest man and in his words, he has “only sixteen years to go, yo.”
Babu frowns in a room, panics and pleads to be left where he is. To this Datta gives him a series of very specific task. They are from writing a love letter to growing a flower which helps him be more lively.
The film is very basic and is properly made of 102 minutes. There are some good scenes from the movie and they are: The way Bachchan stands ready with a towel when his son is out getting drenched in the rain, the way Kapoor is irked by his father’s need to sing along with every bit of a song – “ab ladies part bhi gaayenge aap?”, and the way the words “I hope you understand” are impressively given short shrift. It’s also beautiful to have a father who calls his son Babu in the entire movie. This given one the exact Indian touch.

Overall the movie is a sweet yet a boring one. The two legendary actors have failed to impress their fans and the rating is that of 2.5 stars.
