Domino’s Delivers Pizzas To Soldiers At Siachen On R-Day, And Netizens Salute The Gesture

Siachen glacier is the highest combat zone on planet earth. Staying atop this 76 kilometers long glacier at 5, 400 meters altitude means that soldiers have to conquer their all physical, mental and spiritual limits. At the moment, over 10,000 soldiers are deployed at glacier, where temperatures can drop to minus 60 degrees. Almost 80 per cent of the glacier are located above 16,000 feet, and it is almost a 28 days trek for soldiers to reach some of the farthest pickets on the glacier.
Apart from Pakistani soldiers, the lives of Indian soldiers at Siachin are also at risk of getting a deadly frostbite if their bare skin touches steel (gun trigger, for example) for just over fifteen seconds. In the last 30 years, over 846 soldiers have sacrificed their lives at Siachen due to enemy firing and extreme climate and hostile terrain conditions.

Now, as a gratitude for their selfless service, Domino’s India treated soldiers of the Indian Army stationed at Siachen with hot pizza on this Republic Day. To treat soldiers with the cheesy delight, the pizza delivery service sent up a delivery team to deliver hot pizzas at 20,000 feet. The soldiers are stationed at Indo-China border.

Delivering hot pizzas at such a height was not an easy task and it almost took three months for the company to plan the event. a team of 12 was flown on air force planes from Chandigarh to deliver the delicacies.

The sweet gesture by Dominos was well received by Twitterati who were all excited for the effort. Check out the response:

As I read the news I ordered from you. Thank you for appreciating the service of our brave soldiers.

At Siachen, the Indian Army spends as much as 80 per cent of its time preparing soldiers of deployment. Security forces have also built a war memorial on the banks of the Nubra River. The memorial has the names of Indian soldiers who laid down their lives on the glacier.
