“I Did Mr India Because of Sridevi. It Was a Dream Come True” – Anil Kapoor
Whole Kapoor family is extremely saddened by the sudden demise of legendary actress Sridevi. And so is her brother-in-law and Boney Kapoor’s brother Anil Kapoor who also starred in a film with Sridevi in 1987 ‘Mr India’.
In November 2015, the team of Mr India – Anil Kapoor, Boney Kapoor, Sridevi, Satish Kaushik and Javed Akhtar reunited at the 17th MAMI Film Festival to talk about the iconic film.
During the conversation there, when a journalist asked Anil Kapoor the reason behind him playing the role, which at that time seemed risky, to which he replied, “For all of us, the film is the most important, the script needs to be good and then, of course, comes all the characters – characters achche honge to film achchi hogi. At that stage of my career, my high was that Javed (Akhtar) sir was writing the film, Boney (Kapoor) was producing it and Sridevi of course was and is the biggest actress of our country. Acting opposite her was a dream for me always. I knew that inke saath kaam karke mujhe bahut faayda hoga aur main bhi ek A-list hero bann jaoonga.”
Mr India was produced by Sridevi’s husband Boney Kapoor, and directed by Shekhar Kapur. The film was a huge success as it emerged as the highest grossing Indian film of 1987. The film was not only praised for its amazing actors and great storyline, but also because of its superhit songs like Kaate nahi katte din ye raat, Hawa hawaai and certain dialogues from the movie, Mogambo khush hua are among the most iconic dialogues of Bollywood. Mogambo’s character played by Amrish Puri is also one of the best villains of Bollywood.
Sridevi’s untimely demise on February 24 due to ‘accidental drowning’ shook her fans. She died in the bathtub of a Dubai hotel. Her funeral took place three days after her death, on February 27, where a number of celebrities from the industry showed up to pay last respects to the actress.
