IIT Students Develop Electric Car That Runs On Water! Will It End Our Fuel Problems?

How many times have you prayed for the petrol and diesel prices not to rise? Yes, that goes for the adherent followers of atheism too. Truth be told, fuel crisis is absolutely real. Without an alternate source, the price will keep on rising with passing days. Other than that, there is no denying the fact that they cause pollution. As an alternative, scientists have developed electric cars. That again presents the problem of unavailability of charging stations. What if, there is an electric car that runs on water?
No, we are not kidding! Designed and developed by two IIT students, this is a car that doesn’t need recharging to run. The students at IIT Rookie have a prototype of an electric car that runs on water and aluminum.

Wondering how the car works?  The car runs on simple fuel cell technology. It produces electricity through an electrochemical reaction. With water as the base for the reaction, there is a graphene rod along with a metal plate that generates electricity. After that, the electricity is sent to an electric motor which in turn powers the car.
The makers are quite confident that the batteries can run about 1,000 km on a single charge! However, it will require about a litter of water for every 300 km. After 1,000 km, the aluminum plate needs to be charged.

Thinking it will turn out to be costly if made commercial? Well, the makers have a solution for that too! The cars will have price as any other standard vehicle in the market. Also, the aluminum plates are about Rs 5,000 each and the prices might go down if the demand increases. This is a car also addresses the issue of environmental pollution.

The car is still in its testing phase and more tests are conducted to ensure its commercial viability. Naturally, the netizens were more than elated on hearing such news. Even Biocon’s Kiran Mazumdar Shaw shared the news on her personal Twitter handle:

People across multiple social media started commenting on this Electric car that runs on water. Here are some of the comments:

Greater focus on Innovation for alternate fuels / renewable energy/ electric vehicles or still better, newer, unthinkable now technology can save us Billions of dollars & precious foreign exchange.

The catch is that the water used in the car needs to come from RO. Hence, netizens are also apprehensive that it will cause a rise in the price of bottled water. Check out what they said:

The startup is called ‘Log 9 Materials’ and it is founded by Akshay Singhal. Started two years back, this can be India’s ticket to join the league of countries that introduced alternate fuel options for cars. Check out this video to see the makers take the car for a spin:
