Ivan Ayr’s directorial venture Soni is receiving rave reviews on Twitter. Soni, which was premiered on Netflix India, is a crime drama starring Geetika Vidya Ohlyan and Saloni Batra. When first premiered in the Orrizonti (Horizons) section of the 75th Venice International Film Festival, the movie received a standing ovation. The movie has also won the Facebook Award for Best ‘Work-In-Progress’ project.
It is about the story of a young policewoman named Soni (Geetika Vidya Ohlyan) and her superintendent Kalpana (Saloni Batra), dealing with the growing violent crimes against women in Delhi. The movie chronicles the lives of two Indian women working at the same police department and coming to terms with gendered imbalances, violence and sexual harassment.
The movie shows how these two cops (both are part of special decoy operation) take up the daily challenges as they perform their high-pressure official duties to make the city safer for women. Ivan Ayr’s and Kislye’s script is marvelous as it explores the personal and professional lives of the cops, their ways of dealing with things, and their mutual camaraderie.
The nuanced performances delivered by both Geetika and Saloni keep up with Ivan’s sensitive writing. To sum up, Soni is all about the power imbalance intrinsic in our society.
Soon after the movie was released on Netflix, thousands took to Twitter to share their verdict on the film. As per the audience, apart from outstanding performances, the movie is an all-rounder in all departments: be it production, picturisation, background score and dialogues.
