Why Cheat India: Nothing But A Poor Attempt By Emraan Hashmi And Team To Cheat The Audience

Touted as one of the biggest releases of the first month of 2019, Why Cheat India hit the screens nationwide on January 18. Starring Emraan Hashmi and debutante Shreya Dhanwanthary in lead roles, the movie has been more in news for its last-minute title change than anything else. Let’s find out whether or not it deserves a watch in cinemas.

What Is The Film All About?

Born and brought up in Jhansi, Rakesh Singh (Emraan Hashmi) is the numero uno king of the cheating mafia in the northern part of the country. If one has loads of cash but no merit, he can produce any degree for him within a blink of an eye, you just name it. How does he do this? Well, he is always on the scout for bright students who can write proxy exams for weak students, students who hail from affluent families but are unable to clear highly competitive exams for prestigious IIT and medical institutes across the country. One day, Rakesh comes across a shy but impressively studious student Sattu (Snigdha Deep Chatterjee) who has just cleared his IIT exam with flying colours. Rakesh convinces Sattu to become a proxy student for rich students in return of loads of money. The poor guy does fall prey to his devious plans, but what happens next moves the ground under his feet.

A Good Watch Or A Bad One?
With Why Cheat India, Emraan Hashmi was returning to theatre after one and a half year, and I was excited. But little did I know that his latest film would throw cold water on my excitement. Despite dealing with a fresh topic, Why Cheat India does not bring anything fresh to the table. If you read newspapers regularly, you already know how poor our education system is and what ails it. The film takes various facts and figures from several publications and throws them on celluloid, with some forced emotions here and there. A paper-thin story, marred further by poor execution and unimaginative direction, leaves you squirming in your seat.
The film has an unending list of issues and seems to have been made in inexplicable haste. It is poorly edited, with no proper attention given to the chronology of events it shows. The first half is still bearable, but the second half drags beyond the point. Except for a shocking twist, there is nothing that interests you much in the second half of the flick. The background score of the movie is good though.

Why cheat india review

Talking about performance, Emraan Hashmi does his best. But in absence of a strong story, how much an actor can do? In the role of Rakesh Singh, he looks convincing. Debutante Shreya Dhanwanthary makes a decent debut. Unlike many newcomers, she gets a good part to play and does well. Supporting cast lends good support to the chief cast.

Final Verdict
You feel nothing but cheated after watching Why Cheat India. When the trailer of the film came out a couple of weeks ago, I expected it to be at least a decent watch, if not a mind-blowing one, but it turns out to be the firecracker which never catches fire to explode and give you any joy. The only thing that saves this ship from sinking completely is an honest performance by Emraan Hashmi.
