Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 27 laid the foundation stone for an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. PM Modi also inaugurated super-speciality blocks at medical colleges in Rajaji, Thanjavur and Tirunelveli. The new AIIMS will cost the government Rs 1,264 crore and will become operational in 2022.
It will be a 750-bed hospital which will also focus on post graduate and higher studies. The projects are a part of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana which aims to set up 20 AIIMS, of which six have been established.

According to PM Modi, the government has covered 89,000 beneficiaries under Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) in Tamil Nadu, at a cost of about Rs. 200 crore.
However, following PM Modi’s visit to Tamil Nadu, a war of words (or rather, hashtags) between opposition DMK and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ensued on Twitter.
Before his visit, the top two trends on Twitter were #GoBackModi and #TNWelcomesModi. While the BJP supporters launched the hashtags praising the Prime Minister, such as ‘TN Welcomes Modi’ and ‘Madurai Thanks Modi,’ DMK supporters promoted the hashtag ‘Go Back Modi.’
The Tweeps were critical of Centre’s alleged failure in providing help to people affected by the Cyclone Gaja. People also talked about PM Modi’s silence over the violent Sterlite protests in Tuticorin along with implementation of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET.
